Leighton made studies of sculpture at the National Museum of the Bargello in Florence (drawings in Leighton House, London). This sketch is related to a wooden shield covered with fish skin and decorated with ears of corn and crosses in the Bargello Museum. The shield is described as "Targone di casa Del Pannocchia-Riccomanni, Toscana, fine sec. XIV-XV" (Large plaque of the Del Pannocchia - Riccomanni house, Tuscany, end of the 14th-15th century). We are grateful to Maria Grazia Vaccari at the Bargello Museum for her help with the identification.
