1840
In 1843, photographers Albert Sands Southworth (1811–1894) and Josiah Johnson Hawes (1808–1901) formed a creative partnership that yielded daguerreotypes unrivaled for their artistry and technical achievement. Committed to the highest standards, the duo excelled in producing beautifully composed, evocative portraits, particularly in the large (8 1/2 × 6 1/2 in.) and technically demanding whole-plate format.
