Porter Court in Northeast and Porter Streets in Northeast and Northwest are likely named after members of the Porter family, who had deep roots in the U.S. Navy. David Dixon Porter, for instance, was only the second person to earn the rank of admiral, having followed in the footsteps of his foster brother, David Farragut (who had been the first). Like Farragut, Porter’s time at sea started when he was very young. At just eleven years old, he accompanied his father, Commodore David Porter, on an expedition to fight piracy in the West Indies.
