1861
This lithograph covers several pages of sheet music for a piano solo titled “Requiem.” The music lacks lyrics, but the cover’s imagery and title reinforce its elegiac theme. Prominent Confederate generals killed in battle are represented in oval portraits, framed by interlacing banners bearing the names of fallen comrades. Stonewall Jackson’s central place in a slightly larger oval attests to his legendary stature, which was burnished by the publication of several flattering biographies in 1866.
