This is a hardback book with red cloth covers. At the top of the front cover is embossed gold text that reads "UP FROM SLAVERY / AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY / BOOKER T. WASHINGTON." On the spine at the top is also embossed gold text "UP FROM/ SLAVERY / AN / AUTOBIOGRAPHY / BOOKER T. / WASHINGTON." At the bottom of the spine is additional embossed text "DOUBLEDAY / PAGE & CO." Handwritten on the spine near the bottom is the letter "W” in black. The interior pages are printed in black ink on off-white paper, with 330 pages total organized into seventeen chapters. The top of the pages are edged in gold. Opposite the title page is a black-and-white photograph portrait of Washington, with the handwritten inscription "Booker T. Washington" in black ink. There are several stamps and inscriptions on the inside front and back covers and title page noting previous ownership. There are also handwritten notations on the interior pages and the inside of the back cover.
