A square sampler worked in black, brown, purple, green, beige and pink on a natural ground. At the top four alphabets are worked in black. At the bottom are a house, trees and flowers, and a mourning plaque beneath a willow tree. In the center, three interlocking hearts indicate that the embroiderer's father had had two wives, both of whom were now dead. The hearts are flanked by flowering branches and a verse, and the names and birthdates of the children are embroidered below.
