We were staying in adjoining apartments at Varsity Townhouses, rented for the Summer session of Naropa Institute's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in Boulder, Colorado. We'd come every year since 1974, along with Peter Orlovsky, & Gregory Corso as frequent visitor. Anne Waldman & I co-directed the Buddhist-oriented poetry section. July 1984.

Neal Cassady and his love of that year the star-cross’d Natalie Jackson conscious of their rôles in Market Street Eternity: Cassady had been prototype for Jack Kerouac’s 1950 _On the Road_ saga hero Dean Moriarty, as later in 1960’s he’d taken the driver’s wheel of Ken Kesey’s psychedelic-era day-glo painted Merry Prankster crosscountry bus “Further.” Neal’s illuminated American automobile mania, “unspeakably enthusiastic” friendship & erotic energy had already written his name in brightlit signs of our literary imaginations before movies were made imitating his charm. That’s why we stopped under the marquee to fix the passing hand on the watch, San Francisco, maybe March 1955.

Carl Solomon in his Prince Street apartment several years after we were locked up together in residence on Sixth Floor ward, New York State Psychiatric Institute. He got shock treatments, introduced me to Jean Genet’s _Miracle of the Rose_ and Antonin Artaud’s _Van Gogh, The Man Suicided by Society_ translations, I stayed eight months, weekends off. Afterwards, working mid-town at his uncle’s Ace Books publications, he gave Kerouac small advance on first _On the Road_ sketches (scroll later rejected), saw Jaime DeAngulo’s classic _Indian Tales_ first hard-back through press, & edited William Burroughs’ _Junkie_ paperback first edition. New York, 1953.
