Ceramic ox carts became popular during the eastern Han dynasty (25-220) as tomb furnishings for the afterlife. They continued in use throughout the Six Dynasties and the Tang dynasty (c. 3rd-9th centuries). Ox carts illustrate the commoner’s mode of transportation during this period and, as such, clay models represented the deceased's transportation in the next world. Sturdily constructed wooden carts with large spoked wheels can still be seen in use on farms in rural China.
