Plain white bowls of the Yongzheng period, like this elegant example, are rare, as later artists often saw their undecorated surfaces as an invitation to embellish them. Enamelers in the Republic period in Beijing (1911–49) who were responsible for the production of the so-called houjiacai (later-added color) wares were able to paint in Yongzheng-period patterns, especially florals, and successfully refire the antique bowls.
