Blue and White Ewer (huajiao)

The distinctive shape of this ewer, which is found both with and without a handle, is probably derived from European metalwork. It is termed in Chinese, hua-chiao or flower waterer but its use was undoubtedly decorative. As with several previous dynasties, the Ch'ing court was interested in certain types of foreign taste and fashion, especially silver and gold metalwork.
