The shape of these vases is inspired by the guanyao, or official ware, of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279). That form was in turn derived from ancient bronzes of the Shang dynasty known as hu, which also have pear-shaped bodies and tubular handles but are oval rather than faceted. Many Qianlong vases of this shape have crackled glazes, but this one, with its white porcelain body and plain celadon glaze, is most unusual.
