Buffalohead's work has focused thematically upon describing Indian cultural experience through personal metaphor and narrative. In this recent work, her drawings of animals are juxtaposed with everyday objects from the modern world. Although playful in tone, Buffalohead's images explore the idea of double nature, in which childhood games can be surprisingly dark. As in the video by Doug Aitken, on view in the next gallery, the contrast in Buffalohead's work between the evocation of animals, anthropomorphism, and nature is both humorous and critical. Whereas wild animals once roamed freely on the great plains of the American West, here they must learn to adapt to a new, commercialized landscape.
