Ceres (the goddess of agriculture) often stands for the season of summer, and Bacchus (the god of wine), for fall, when their products are harvested. But as a pair they also represent food and drink, solid and liquid nourishment. Both deities are combined in Roman poet Terence’s famous line, “Without Ceres and Bacchus, Venus is cold," meaning, without food and wine, there is no amorous desire. The bronzes would have almost certainly decorated a dining room and might have been used as centerpieces on the dinner table for festive occasions.
