
Born in Columbus, Ohio, George Bellows attended the New York School of Art, where he studied under Robert Henri, the leader of a group of artists known as "The Eight" (later known as the Ashcan School). Though originally not part of the group, Bellows was closely aligned with its goals and gritty aesthetics, particularly evident in his iconic images of prizefighters in the ring.
