This work demonstrates that even as late as 1918, artists used the worker as a figural type to portray the lower classes’ struggle for survival. Lucien Ott’s sympathetic treatment of a tanner, caught in a moment of relaxation amid the trappings of his trade, represents attempts by artists of the day to make works that would appeal to the broadest possible public.
