Trained at Yale University and in Paris in the 1920s, sculptor Dudley Vaill Talcott's subsequent travels to Norway and Greenland inspired him to write two books. This monumental presentation piece is based on Talcott's 1936 book "Report of the Company," and depicts scenes from individual stores aboard the North Sea fishing boat Norkap II between 1929-1935. The Nordic Bowl was reportedly commissioned by one of the men who served with Talcott; this particular example is from the artist's personal collection. Talcott's work was shown widely in the U.S. in the 1920s and 1930s, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in the 1939 New York World's Fair.
