Alexis Vollon, the son of Antoine Vollon (also featured in this exhibition), was trained by his father and explored many of the same realist themes, including domestic genre scenes, still lifes, and landscapes. Here, he combined a free application of color in some areas-notably the foreground foliage and distant buildings-with meticulous work in pen and ink to supply detail to the cottages lined up along the canal. The younger Vollon, however, never received the popular or critical attention that attended his father's successful career.
