The fleeting quality of a sunset is captured here with layered translucent washes. This area of the Atlantic coast, near the town of Saint-Jean-de-Monts in the Vendée, was popular with artists from 1892 until well into the 20th century. Delâtre's watercolor shows the vegetation on one of the dunes that protected the marshlands from the ferocious tides. This work represents a departure for Delâtre, who is known primarily as a printer and etcher.
