The image relates to the print Marc must have known by Johann Balthasar Probst, after Johann Elias Ridinger (1698?-1727) "Trotting" in "Neue Reit-Kunst," 1722 (e.g. in Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart). The central horse and rider in Marc's woodcut is in the background of the training scene in Ridinger's image (note the very similar pose; discussed in exh. cat., "Franz Marc: Horses", Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, published by the Busch-Reisinger Museum, 2000, pp.250-251)
