Although the Hours of the Virgin are traditionally illustrated with scenes from the early life of Christ, sometimes the Passion of Christ, or the events leading up to and immediately after the Crucifixion, are used. This scene of Christ carrying the cross, used for the sixth hour (Sext), is placed between a scene of flagellation, or beating, and the Crucifixion. This book of hours uses the feminine pronoun in prayers, indicating that it had a female owner.
