Jasper Johns was one of several American artists who, during the 1960s, made the familiar and commonplace the subjects of their work. In paintings, sculptures, and prints, he has explored favorite images, including targets, letters, numerals, and flags. The lithograph 0 through 9 shows these numbers imposed on a field of red, yellow, and blue. Forced to disentangle the numbers from one another, the viewer not only creates a kind of cinematic sequence of them but also becomes aware of the abstract nature of numbers as forms.
