Mies designed the IIT campus on a 24 × 24 –foot grid, which allowed him to create a variety of buildings whose dimensions related to one another and to the overall plan. In certain areas, the paving stones and plantersseem to gesture to the gridded system underpinning the otherwise open landscape between buildings.
