The Skeleton depicts the construction of the Monroe Building, located right across the street from the Art Institute. Because the printing process reverses the image on the printing plate, this view is a mirror image of how the corner exists. Miniscule laborers toil away as the shell of the building becomes a skyscraper. Nordfeldt was considered one of the premier printmakers of his time. Coincidentally, he won a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, at which Gustave Baumann was awarded a gold.
