Moyenvic, Lorraine, 1631

Not to be confused with the 18th-century family of artists of the same name, Nicolas Cochin was born in Troyes and began his artistic career as a painter on glass. He soon discovered the prints of Stefano della Bella and Jacques Callot and devoted his talents to making copies of these and the work of other masters. His earliest prints were made in Troyes in June 1635, but by 1636 he was established in Paris. This view of the Lorraine, which was under siege. by the French in 1631, may be a liberal adaptation of a work such as the adjacent print by Gabriel Pérelle, which was also inspired by the more renowned artist Jacques Callot.
