The sovereign state of Tanganyika (today’s mainland Tanzania) claimed its freedom from British rule on December 9, 1961. Every year on December 9, popularly known as siku ya uhuru (Independence Day), Tanzanians celebrate their nonviolent transition to independence. They decorate buildings with green bunting like the one depicted on this border design with the fabric points held high by a parade of giraffes.
