Here, Kasamatsu Shirō showed cherry trees at the peak of their bloom in Ueno Park. The park is still the prime location for cherry blossom viewing in Tokyo today. Kasamatsu specialized in nostalgic, seasonal images of famous locations; Blooming Cherry at Tōshōgū Shrine is one of his most celebrated prints. Most of his early prints were destroyed in the great Kantō earthquake of 1923, but his output after that incident and later in life was prolific.
