In his Pavilion Park etchings, Philip Hanson gave free rein to his surreal architectural anthropomorphization. These forms, particularly the small freestanding obelisks, recall the sculptures of Chicago artist H. C. Westermann. Pavilion Park’s buildings are filled with boisterous, slightly menacing energy. The smooth white pavilion parapets and facades recall adobe Mission-Style buildings from the American West. Hiding behind the facades are mountainous congregations of pyramids emitting sparks of light. The energy and movement in Pavilion Park is electric, illuminating and bringing Hanson’s buildings to life.
