Joan Flasch was the manager of SAIC’s supply store for many years, during which time her willingness to find rare papers and odd materials to support students’ needs earned her the title “Merchant to the Universe.” Concurrently, she taught bookbinding at SAIC, serving as a dedicated taskmaster with a sense of play and humor that inspired many generations of bookmakers.
