About
A Jewish immigrant from Poland, Irving Norman moved to New York in 1923, later relocating to Los Angeles. Throughout his life, he struggled with feelings of alienation and often worked in opposition to prevailing artistic trends. His political leanings attracted attention during the McCarthy era, and he was reportedly under FBI surveillance for many years. He described his art as commentary on the contemporary world.
