About
Kimono with enlarged patterns like the oversized fern leaves seen here came into vogue in the Taisho period (1912-26). The trendy palate of gray, black, white, and peach would have appealed to a modan gaaru (a "modern girl" in the lingo of the time). A more traditional client could also have appreciated the fern's poetic connotations, which are elaborated on this lacquer box, also in our collection (AIC 2011.282).
