Sir Hubert von Herkomer, a Victorian-era painter of portraits and bucolic scenes, designed this panel as one component of a cohesive interior scheme for his home Lululaund, in England. The artist named the ornate Gothic Revival mansion in honor of his late wife, Lulu. Her name appears in the velvet design, beneath the scrolling banderole, which contains the Herkomer family motto, Propriis alis (By my own wings), written in Gothic script. The panel was woven by the artist’s uncle.
