1910–1930
The bold, geometric pattern of rectangles, squares, and triangles on this kimono is characteristic of the 1920s. It reflects the influence of the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes and that exhibition’s far-reaching dissemination of the Art Deco style. However, the steps of alternating blocks of different colors and patterns allude to late 16th and 17th century kimono patterning of dan gawari.
