Fifth Stone

Fifth Stone was printed from two lithographic stones, one inked in black and one in yellow. Until then, Bontecou had experimented with color in her prints mostly through the use of colored paper—not ink. In this working proof, Bontecou printed both colors and then applied a significant amount of yellow and ocher pastel by hand, evidently not yet satisfied with the image.
