Jeremiah Dummer was an apprentice to Boston silversmiths John Hull and Robert Sanderson, and in turn he taught the trade to Edward Winslow. This tankard is one of a small group made by Dummer that employs cut-card decoration. The designs on the rear of the tankard and the top of the lid were cut from a thin card of silver and applied to the surface of the tankard with liquid silver or solder.
